BEDFORD – A woman was arrested on Wednesday, March 27, after Bedford Police officers responded to the 7th Street and Lincoln Avenue area after a report of an accident and a vehicle leaving the scene.
When police arrived at 9:10 p.m., two males told police a female driver had hopped the curb onto the sidewalk while attempting to leave a parking lot, drove for several seconds, and then locked up her brakes in front of a truck driven by Bryce Morris, causing him to hit her. Morris told police he had not realized he had hit the woman’s vehicle due to the size of his truck.
Police learned the female driver was 40-year-old Sarah Michael of Bedford. Police attempted to locate her. They received a report that Michael was causing a disturbance at Steak N’ Steak on James Avenue.
When Officer Sarah Haluda arrived at Steak N’ Shake, she found Michael’s vehicle in the parking lot and Michael leaning on the counter. She was yelling racial slurs and derogatory statements at employees. Officer Haluda said Michael was intoxicated.
Officer Haluda asked Michael to leave the building to discuss the accident. She told police someone “hit and run on her” several times.
Michael refused to submit to a portable breath test but did submit to field sobriety tests, which she failed. Officers attempted to detain Michael, but she pulled away, began flailing her arms, and attempted to walk away. Officers were able to take Michael into custody. She was transported to Bedford Police Department, and then after a warrant was issued, she was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw.
She was then transported to jail on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident, and resisting arrest.
