Indiana Wesleyan University will host New York Times columnist and PBS NewsHour commentator David Brooks

MARION — Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) announces it will host New York Times columnist and PBS NewsHour commentator David Brooks on April 4, 2024.

Dr. Erin E. Devers, Professor of Psychology, will moderate the conversation with Brooks concerning his recently released book, How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen. Brooks’ book, the subject of a recent study by many faculty and administration members, offers the perfect capstone to these ongoing discussions. Dr. Aly Williams, Vice President of Academic Affairs, will host the evening, and President Jon S. Kulaga will offer the invocation.

Regarding this event, Dr. Williams said, “Indiana Wesleyan University is committed to providing academic opportunities to promote personal growth and development and create a sense of belonging within our university community. This spring, David Brooks’ book How to Know a Person: The Art of Seeing Others Deeply and Being Deeply Seen has been the focus of one such opportunity. Using themes presented in the book and emphasizing Jesus’ command to love one another, we are learning to listen better and engage in more meaningful ways with those whose experiences may differ from ours. David’s visit to campus is the culmination of this effort and gives the IWU community an amazing opportunity to engage directly with the author. We hope this visit catalyzes fostering a more welcoming campus environment.”

The conversation will occur at 7:30 p.m. in the Phillippe Performing Arts Center (PPAC) auditorium on Indiana Wesleyan’s Campus. The Lumen Research Institute is organizing the evening. For more information regarding this event and how to be involved, contact Todd Ream at todd.ream@indwes.edu.
