STATEHOUSE— Local communities can proceed with road and bridge projects thanks to a recent boost in state funding supported by State Reps. Stephen Bartels (R-Eckerty) and Chris May (R-Bedford).
Through Indiana’s Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, 252 communities across the state will receive over $207 million. The funds can be used for road and bridge preservation, road reconstruction, intersection improvements, and other purposes.
“The state and local partnerships built from the Community Crossings program are paying dividends for our communities,” Bartels said. Thanks to this funding, our small towns and cities have been able to make great progress on critical infrastructure projects, road and bridge repair, and more.”
Area grant recipients include:
- Bedford, $535,077;
- Mitchell, $152,872;
- Orange County, $1.5 million; and
- Orleans, $146,125.
“It’s great to see communities of all sizes work with the state to stretch their dollars and complete projects,” May said. “I encourage other local communities with infrastructure projects to apply for the next round of matching grants.”
To qualify for the competitive grant, smaller municipalities provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while larger communities offer a 50 percent match. State law requires 50 percent of the available matching funds to be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. Since 2016, Community Crossings has awarded more than $1.6 billion to improve local roads and bridges.
