BEDFORD – A woman was arrested on drug and alcohol charges after a Bedford Police officer stopped her vehicle on Thursday, April 4th
At 4:29 p.m., Bedford Police Officer Landon Jones was patrolling in the area of 12th and U Streets when he observed 56-year-old Julie Borden, of Bedford, driving a green Chevrolet Aveo north on U Street from 12th Street. Officer Jones knew Borden was driving on a suspended driver’s license and stopped her.
Borden had a female juvenile passenger in the vehicle.
Officer Jones said Borden was intoxicated. Her eyes were glassy, and she had rapid speech and made erratic movements.
Officer Michael Bell was requested to respond to the scene due to Borden’s erratic behavior.
Borden was asked to step out of her vehicle. Borden attempted to take her purse with her and was asked to put it back in the car. She then asked if she could get her vape out of her purse and police allowed her to do that. But she also pulled out a black pouch. The officers asked what was in the pouch, and Borden said it contained parts for her vape. She was told to put the pouch back in her purse and leave the purse in the car.
Police learned that Borden had previous drug convictions. She was placed in the back of a police vehicle. She denied taking any drugs but told police there were syringes in the car. She said carries syringes for her friends that use them. She gave police consent to search her vehicles.
Inside the black pouch police found a baggy containing crystal meth and multiple syringes.
Borden was asked to do several field sobriety tests which she failed. She told police she had been drinking Parrot Bay rum at around 3:30 p.m.
She submitted to a SoToxa test which was positive for meth and amphetamines.
SoToxa is a handheld analyzer that uses an oral fluid swab to detect the presence of six kinds of drugs: cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates, cannabis (THC), amphetamine, and benzodiazepines.
Borden was taken to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw.
The female juvenile was released to a family member.
JBorden was arrested on charges of possession of meth in the presence of a child, possession of a hypodermic syringe or needle, OWI, OWI endangerment, and driving while her driver’s license was suspended with a prior conviction.
Jackson Towing and Recovery Inc. towed the car.
