LAKE CO. – On Tuesday, April 24th, troopers were dispatched to a multi-vehicle crash on I-65 northbound at the 257.7 mile marker. This location is just south of the ramp to I-80/94.
This crash is still under investigation; however, preliminary investigation by troopers on the scene and crash reconstructionists shows that a Chevrolet HHR was traveling north in the right lane when the driver failed to slow down in traffic and rear-ended a 2010 Hyundai Elantra.
This impact caused the Elantra to travel into the path of a 2017 Dodge Ram pickup. The pickup struck the Elantra on the driver’s side. The driver of the Hyundai suffered traumatic injuries and was later declared deceased at St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office will release the deceased’s name once identification has been made and the family has been notified.
Traffic was backed up along I-65 for several hours due to the severity of the crash and the subsequent investigation and collision reconstruction of the scene. While troopers were investigating this crash, a pursuit occurred in the backup. That pursuit ended near the crash scene, where the suspect was apprehended.
