HURON – On Saturday, April 27th, at approximately 7:20 p.m., the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a possible homicide that had occurred in the 200 block of Winegar Road.
Deputies, detectives, and command staff responded to the scene in a remote area near Brunner Cemetery along the Lawrence/Orange County line. Officers located a deceased male as well as a witness. Officers were told that the male suspect had already left the area in his vehicle.
Surrounding counties were notified to “be on the lookout” for the suspect and suspect vehicle. Additionally, a Lawrence County detective conducted surveillance on the suspect’s residence on North Fifth Street in Mitchell, confirming the suspect’s car was there.
Officers on scene determined that although the access lane to the cemetery and the subsequent scene was in Lawrence County, the actual homicide scene was actually inside Orange County by a very short distance.
At that time, Orange County Sheriff’s Office personnel, along with Indiana State Police Jasper District investigators, responded to take over the investigation. Lawrence County had a detective and multiple officers remain on the scene to continue with scene security and assist in the investigation as needed.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office command staff and multiple deputies went to the suspect’s residence in Mitchell, where they were able to make contact with the male and take him into custody without incident. The male was transported to Orange County for their investigators.
The Indiana State Police Jasper District and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are the main investigating agencies. They will release any additional information, including the name of the victim or suspect, any arrest, or any charges.
According to Sheriff Greg Day, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office will have no further information about this investigation.
