Seymour sweeps past short-handed Stars

BNL coach Joni Stigall talks with Jessie Faubion during a break in the action. Faubion was shifted to No.1 singles as the Stars adjusted to the loss of Becca Epping to an injury.

SEYMOUR – Seymour swept past short-handed Bedford North Lawrence 5-0 during girls high school tennis action on Tuesday.

With top singles player Becca Epping out for the season with a broken foot, the Stars had to shift lineup positions. The Owls didn’t drop a set against their Hoosier Hills Conference rival.

“Losing your No.1 singles player, and having to shift players from positions they were successful in to ones they won’t be, is really tough,” BNL coach Joni Stigall said. “I’m super proud of Jessie (Faubion) and her willingness to play wherever she’s needed. She played really well, she was just outmatched.”

Faubion fell to Ava Sunbury 6-1, 6-2 at No.1 singles. Seymour’s Elise Hartung topped Ava McKinney 6-1, 6-1 at No.2, while Claire Combs conquered Nadia Anderson 6-4, 7-5 at No.3.

In doubles, Seymour’s Addison Hunsley and Kelsea Hunsley teamed to stop Kenley Craig and Izzy Alldredge 6-2, 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) at No.1. Lori Fee and Emma Woodard fought off Meryl Klein and Emma Conover 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker), 6-1 at No.2.

“We have a lot of work to do at practice,” Stigall said. “We want to finish the season strong, no matter our circumstances, so we will talk some things over and get back to work.”

BNL will visit Edgewood on Thursday.
