Police find empty beer cans and flask of whiskey, man arrested on OWI charge

BEDFORD – Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Captain Harrison Fleetwood was on patrol on US 50 East at 7:47 p.m. when he spotted a possible near Limestone Run Road on Thursday, April 30.

Captain Harrison reported the driver of a 2010 Toyota Prius had drifted across the double center line several times. He initiated a traffic stop. Indiana State Trooper Jesse Crane arrived to assist.

Police say the driver, 30-year-old Sean Mullen of Fairland, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.

Mullen failed several field sobriety tests. He submitted to a preliminary breath test and had a blood-alcohol content of 0.182 percent.

Mullen refrained from answering questions and was detained on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, OWI with a blood-alcohol level of 0.15 or more.

His vehicle was detained. During a vehicle inventory, police found several open empty beer cans under the driver’s seat and a plastic flask that contained what appeared to be whiskey.

Stone City Service and Collision Center towed the vehicle.

Lawrence County Circuit Court Judge Nathan Nikirk issued a warrant for a blood draw. Mullen was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital and then transported to jail.
