INDIANA— The Space Weather Prediction Center forecasts a severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm Friday night, allowing Hoosiers to see the Northern Lights.
Below is the current forecast for the northern lights Friday night going into early Saturday morning:
The KP index measures the magnitude of geomagnetic storms. This scale runs from 0 to 9, with a higher number indicating a stronger storm. The peak KP, which the SWPC forecasts for Friday night, is 8, which would have them lower on the horizon in Indiana.
The aurora’s colorful green, red, and purple light shifts gently and often changes shape like softly blowing curtains. Don’t expect brilliant colors. The northern lights this far south in Indiana will be dim and low on the north horizon.
