CHARLESTOWN – Class 3A No.7 Charlestown ended Bedford North Lawrence’s nine-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory during high school softball action on Friday.
The Pirates (19-2) frustrated BNL’s offense as pitcher Hannah Burns scattered six hits (all singles) and struck out seven, and the Stars also stranded nine runners.
“We didn’t square it up like we have been,” BNL coach Brad Gilbert said. “She mixed it up a little bit, moved it around and kept us off balance.
“They were solid. It came down to them putting a few more balls in play with runners on than we did. We had some chances, we just didn’t get that timely hit. That’s the way it goes sometimes.”
The Stars (15-10-1) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. With two outs, Ava Ratliff was hit by a pitch, and pinch runner Jaden Schofield scored on Kendall Graves’ single to center. The Pirates responded in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Burns lofted a sacrifice fly, and Avarie Freiberger gave Charlestown the lead with a soft single.
The Pirates took a 3-1 advantage in the fifth on Burns’ two-out RBI single. BNL added a run in the sixth as Anna Williams walked, Sara Williams singled her to third, and Britta Warren chased home the run with a ground out.
Charlestown added two key insurance runs in the sixth on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Aubree Latham.
Danielle Stegeman had two hits for BNL.
The Stars will host Loogootee on Monday.
