INDIANAPOLIS- The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office is proud to announce a partnership with the Indiana Council for Economic Education (ICEE) based at Purdue University. ICEE is an academic outreach center for the Department of Agriculture Economics and helps prepare students to become contributing members to our economy.
Financial Literacy is a major component of the Indiana Secretary of State’s Securities Division. Secretary Diego Morales is passionate about equipping young Hoosiers with tools and resources to make informed economic decisions.
A grant from the Indiana Secretary of State’s Securities Division supports ICEE’s personal finance project. Part of the project includes an annual Indiana Stock Market game in which students receive a fictitious $100,000 to invest in a portfolio over a 10-week period. During stock market simulation, students are introduced to concepts related to financial decision-making, specifically saving, and investing.
This afternoon, students who participated in the stock market simulation and received the highest scores were awarded. Secretary Morales also presented a $94,150 grant check to the Indiana Council of Economic Education. The grant covers facilitating the stock market simulator program, personal finance challenges, and teacher instruction on financial literacy. The goal is to better prepare students for the financial literacy high school credit requirement needed for graduation starting in 2028.
“With technology constantly changing, our Hoosier students still need to understand the basics when it comes to finances. My office is proud to partner with programs like this that are empowering students to be confident when making money related decisions,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.
Indiana Securities Commissioner Marie Castetter and Secretary Morales would like to not only congratulate the students who made savvy investments and won awards but also thank the teachers for their commitment to providing students with valuable, hands-on learning experiences.
The ICEE has presented the stock market game in Indiana since 1989. During that time, thousands of students have participated in the program. Research has shown that students who participated in the game had higher scores in economics and math compared to peers who didn’t play in it.
