INDIANAPOLIS– Secretary of State Diego Morales met with U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) Director Jen Easterly and other state/federal election security officials.
During this productive meeting, Secretary Morales and his team were briefed on several topics, including high-level technology capabilities, combatting foreign threats, protecting election administrators, and the process of distributing accurate information about election infrastructure security. Collaboration with the Secretary of State’s ongoing 2024 Election Safety and Security program was discussed.
The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office is committed to holding safe and secure elections statewide. Collaborating with local, state, and federal agencies is crucial to protecting the integrity of elections and increasing voter confidence.
“As Indiana’s Chief Election Officer, we cannot be complacent in how we conduct our elections, and we must take precautions against any potential threats. Elections are a team effort and working alongside our partners helps to establish the highest level of security. I continue to have the utmost confidence in the elections across the Hoosier state,” said Diego Morales, Indiana Secretary of State.
During this past Legislative Session, Senate Enrolled Act 170 was passed to expand the definition of election worker and provide legal protections for the important and challenging work local election officials, staff, election administrators, and poll workers do. Under the new law, injuring, threatening, or interfering with an election worker is a Level 6 Felony.
“I’ve had the privilege of spending time with Chief Election Officials across the country of both parties and witness how tirelessly they work to ensure that their citizens’ votes are counted as cast. It’s why I have confidence in the integrity of our elections and why the American people should as well. I’m especially grateful for Secretary Morales’ leadership and look forward to our continued partnership as we work together to ensure the security and resilience of our election infrastructure,” said Jen Easterly, CISA Director.
The Indiana Secretary of State’s Office is working on several additional safety initiatives in preparation for the November General Election.
