WHITLEY CO. – The Indiana State Police is investigating a fatal crash that occurred yesterday evening at approximately 6:30 p.m. in the east 6500 block of State Road 114, Whitley County. The collision involved a single passenger vehicle that struck and killed a pedestrian, identified as Carl W. Moehle, 83, of Roanoke, IN.
The preliminary investigation found that Moehle was standing in the roadway out in front of his residence, apparently picking up trash on the roadway, when a white 2009 Chrysler van crested the hill and struck Moehle. Evidence suggests that the van driver, Alison Harrison-Campbell, 39, of Huntington, took evasive action and swerved left to avoid hitting Moehle. The impact caused Moehle to be thrown into a side ditch.
Mr. Moehle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Whitley County Coroner.
Harrison-Campbell was fully cooperative with investigators. As required by law, she was transported to Parkview Huntington for a blood draw. Those results are pending as the crash investigation continues.
This remains an active investigation. There is no further information to release at this time. Once the investigation is finished, it will be forwarded to the Whitley County Prosecutor for review.
The Moehle family has been notified.
The Indiana State Police were assisted at the scene by the Whitley County and Huntington County Sheriff’s Departments, Parkview EMS medics, Roanoke Fire Department, the Whitley County Coroner, and Smith Brother’s Towing service.
