Free program series will mark Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month in June

INDIANA – June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, and the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter is marking the occasion with a series of free virtual programs.

The series will kick off on Tuesday, May 28, with a program to raise awareness in local communities. Additional programs will focus on caregiving, the latest research and treatment options, and healthy habits that can help protect the brain. Participants can join all the programs or choose the ones that are best for them.

Patty Willaert, program director of Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter

“Alzheimer’s affects nearly everyone in some way – whether they are living with the disease, caring for someone who is, or just interested in steps that can help reduce the risk,” said Patty Willaert, program director of Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter. “By offering these programs virtually, Hoosiers throughout the state can join from the comfort of their homes.”

The series will include two new “Empowered Caregiver” programs offered by the Alzheimer’s Association. “Building Foundations of Caregiving” explores the role of caregivers and the changes they may experience, as well as tips for building a support team and managing caregiver stress. “Supporting Independence” focuses on helping the person living with dementia take part in daily activities, providing the right amount of support and balancing safety and independence while managing expectations.

During the “Advancing the Science” program, attendees will hear from Paige Logan, a researcher with the IU School of Medicine and an ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Association International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART).
