SEYMOUR – A Columbus man was sentenced in Jackson Circuit Court on Thursday, May 16.

Tre Xavier Vires

Judge Richard W. Pynter sentenced 29-year-old Tre Xavier Vires to 12 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections on each count. Judge Poynter suspended two years and gave Vires four days credit for the time served on each count. The sentences will run concurrently.

Vires had pleaded guilty on April 16, 2024, to felony charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident resulting in death and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash resulting in catastrophic injury.

Vires was arrested on Monday, April 3, 2023, after he fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run accident in Seymour.

The fatal accident happened at 10:46 p.m. on Friday, March 24th. Seymour Police Department received a report of an unconscious person lying in the roadway in the 600 block of South Vine Street.

When officers were responding, dispatch received a second 911 call from 33-year-old Tiffany Brewer, of Seymour, who reported she and her father Charles Layman had been hit by a vehicle.

When officers arrived, they located 73-year-old Layman of Seymour with no signs of life. Still, they began lifesaving measures until Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and Seymour Fire Department personnel arrived.

Both Layman and Brewer were transported to Schneck Medical Center. Layman was pronounced dead at the hospital. Brewer suffered injuries to her face, hand, and leg.

On Sunday and Monday, investigators received information about the vehicle’s driver and location.

On Monday, March 22, investigators interviewed Vires before he was arrested and transported to the Jackson County Jail at 3:01 p.m.

Officers also obtained a search warrant for a home on Emma Drive in Seymour to look for the vehicle Vires was operating at the time of the incident.

Investigators then located a blue 2010 Honda Civic registered to Vires in the garage with extensive front-end damage.
