The District will be providing a free composting workshop on Saturday, June 8th

BLOOMINGTON—The EPA says 96% of households’ wasted food ends up in landfills, incinerators, or drains to sewer systems.

On Saturday, June 8, there will be a FREE home composting workshop from 9:00 am until Noon in the Education room at the Administration building at the South Walnut Recycling Center.

The Waste Reduction District sponsors the workshop.

During the workshop, you will learn nature’s way of recycling and the what, where, how, and why of composting. The District’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Elisa Pokral, will teach the class.

Composting is a responsible way to handle food waste. Turn food waste into fertile soil for your yard. Join a nationwide movement to reduce waste by home composting.

The free workshop, held at the South Walnut Recycling Center, will also cover invasive plants.

Register today by emailing Pokral at epokral@mcswmd.org or call 812-349-2866 ext. 2020.

At 11:30 p.m., you will also learn how to identify invasive plants and why their removal from your yard or business property is essential.

Margaret Dalle-Ave, a volunteer with Monroe County Identify and Reduce Invasive Species (MC-IRIS) and various other plant-related organizations, will help you identify some invasives.

The District reminds the public that tours of South Walnut facilities are offered to individuals and groups year-round, as are educational opportunities on “Citizen Science”/environmental education. Call Pokral at 812-349-2020 to book programs and tours.
