INDIANAPOLIS- On August 9, 2023, Troopers at the State Police Bloomington Post received information from a woman alleging she was raped in Indianapolis. A detective from the Indiana State Police Indianapolis District was assigned to the case. The investigation resulted in the arrest of 34-year-old Sheldon Drost Vargas-Garcia of Indianapolis.
During this complex investigation, detectives conducted interviews and developed investigated leads to identify a suspect. Investigators submitted evidence to the Indiana State Police Crime Lab; those results helped develop probable cause to make an arrest. It is alleged that Vargas-Garcia committed sexual battery against an adult female on August 2, 2023, at an apartment in Indianapolis. Detectives presented their findings to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, which subsequently issued an arrest warrant. Tuesday, May 21, 2023, Detectives located Vargas-Garcia in Noblesville, Indiana, and arrested him. He now faces the following Charges:
- Rape – IC 35-42-4-1(a)(1)/F3
- Rape – IC 35-42-4-1(a)(4)/F3
- Sexual Battery – IC 35-42-4-8(a)(1)(A)/F6
Vargas-Garcia was incarcerated in the Marion County Jail. All crimes mentioned in this release are alleged, and all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
