Seymour house fire leaves one dead, one injured

SEYMOUR – On Memorial Day, May 27, 2024, at approximately 9:10 a.m., Seymour Police Officers Sam Hughes and Joe Fagan were on routine patrol when they observed a fully involved residential fire at Hancock and Euclid Streets.

Officers Hughes and Fagan found a female yelling for help and suffering from smoke inhalation. The woman was standing on the front porch of the burning home.

The officers attended to the female and brought her to safety. The officers then entered the residence to try and save a male individual who was still inside. Unfortunately, the conditions inside the residence were too bad, and the officers were forced to leave the location.

Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and attended to the female victim before she was transported to Schneck Medical Center for treatment. Her condition is not known at the time.

The male, identified as Jonathan W. White, 53, of Seymour, was fatally injured in the fire and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Seymour Fire Department extinguished the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The Seymour Fire Department and the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office are conducting the investigation.

Seymour Police and the Jackson County Coroner’s Office are also involved in the investigation.
