Woman becomes combative during a traffic stop, arrested on OWI charges

BEDFORD – A Mitchell woman was arrested on alcohol and resisting arrest charges after being stopped for a non-working headlight.

According to a probable cause affidavit, on Sunday, May 26 at 2:49 a.m. Bedford Police Sgt. Max Uebelhoer was patrolling northbound on Lincoln Avenue and was approaching John Williams Boulevard when he noticed a silver Chevrolet Cobalt traveling south on Lincoln Avenue. The vehicle entered the roundabout and traveled west on John Williams Boulevard in the right lane. As the driver approached the intersection of O Street, she abruptly veered to the right and struck the sidewalk curb then overcorrected and veered into the left lane westbound lane.

Sgt. Uebelhoer initiated a traffic stop. The driver continued west and would not stop. The driver then abruptly accelerated for a short distance. Sgt. Uebelhoer alerted other Bedford officers to the situation. A short time later, the driver abruptly slammed on the brakes and stopped at the intersection of John Williams Boulevard and R Street.

Sgt. Uebelhoer conducted a felony traffic stop and ordered the driver out of the vehicle. She failed to exit the vehicle.

Additional officers arrived on the scene, and they approached the vehicle together and again ordered the female out of the vehicle. She refused to exit the vehicle. Sgt. Uebelhoer opened the door, physically removed the woman from the vehicle, and placed her in handcuffs.

Amy Terrell

The driver was 40-year-old Amy Terrell of Mitchell.

Police say Terrell smelled of alcohol. While informing Terrell of her Miranda rights, she continued to talk over the officer and would not listen. She then said she would not talk to officers or submit to any sobriety tests.

After Judge Nathan Nikirk issued a search warrant, Officer Taylor Daughterty transported Terrell to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw. Terrell was combative and refused to exit the police vehicle when they arrived at the hospital. He had to be forcibly removed and carried inside the hospital.

Terrell was then transported to jail on charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, resisting law enforcement by force, Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, OWI endangerment, OWI refusal, and was issued citations for improper headlights and unsafe lane movement.
