H. Leon Myers, formerly of Bedford, Indiana, passed away on May 30, 2024. He was born on October 10, 1933, at the peak of the Great Depression in Pinkstaff, Illinois! His parents, Delos Silven Myers and Trellah Brown Myers, were from Lawrence County, Indiana, but had moved to Illinois to find work.
Leon had five sisters: Alice Valen, Santa Barbara, California, and sisters Pauline Horton, Geraldine Myers, Lois Ruff, and Peggy Taylor, who are deceased. He married Imogene Lucille Burris on Nov 29, 1958; they were married 55 years. She preceded him in death in 2013; they had seven children: David with his wife (Machel), Roy (Christine), Dennis (Tracy), Doyle (Susan), Emery who passed away in 2022, Vincent Dee Myers who died at birth and Regina (John). Many grandchildren, as well as great-grandchildren, also survive!
Hard work, family, and a dedication to God and Country defined Leon’s life. As a young man, he helped his father work a 220-acre farm in Orange County near Huron, Indiana. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1953-1956. He worked on the B&O Railroad, for the County Highway, and retired from Crane Naval Weapons Support Center as a Heavy Machinery Operator. He was a member of The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints and an avid genealogist who traced his family’s roots back many generations. Leon was very active and could always be found working in the yard, cleaning up an abandoned cemetery, or serving his neighbors. Until a bout with cancer slowed him down last year, he could be found driving his Subaru Outback around Southern Indiana with the back full of tools and mixed gas for his chainsaw and weed eater. He might be cleaning a ditch, looking for long-lost relatives at a distant courthouse, visiting old friends or trimming trees with a chainsaw, but you wouldn’t find him loafing! He will be missed by all who loved and knew him and he will be welcomed home by many individuals on the other side.
