Couple steals credit card charging more than $5,000, arrested

BEDFORD— In March 2019, a Fort Wayne couple was arrested on theft, fraud, and forgery charges.

Police arrested 35-year-old Devin and 28-year-old Haley Bovenschen.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the couple used another person’s MasterCard and spent more than $5,719 between December 24, 2018, and January 17, 2019.

Detective Brandon Woodward began his investigation on February 8, 2019, and found that most purchases were made at businesses in Bedford, and a few were made online.

The items included auto parts, new tires, pet supplies, a Traxxas RC truck, video games, SmileDirectClub, Transitions, credit cards, phone cards, and numerous other items.

“The couple was captured on video taking credit cards and phone cards and loading them both with $200 on January 4. They pay for the cards with the stolen credit card and then go shopping again in the store and pay for those items with the new credit cards just loaded with cash. This same action was done on  January 5, 2019, but for $620.64.”

Police spoke to the couple, and both admitted to using the credit card but denied knowing it was stolen. They were given the card by a friend, Mike, visiting from Jacksonville, Florida. They told police this friend allowed them to use the credit card for their hospitality. However, neither could give the police Mike’s information.

The information was forwarded to the Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office, and warrants were issued for their arrests.
