BEDFORD – On Friday, June 7, at approximately 12:05 a.m. Lawrence County Central Dispatch received a call from a female advising that a male was trying to choke her and her daughter.
Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Sgt. Whitney Daugherty-Anderson, J. Rhoades, and C. James responded to the 700 block of East Oolitic Road.
Officers asked 40-year-old Adam Bland to exit the home.
An ambulance was requested to the scene to check the two female victims. Both refused to be transported to the hospital.
The woman said she was in the bathroom when Bland wanted to talk to her about his cheating. Bland was angered when she told him she didn’t want to talk to him. He then attempted to take her phone, slammed her against the wall, and placed his hands around her neck. The woman had visible injuries to her neck.
The daughter attempted to pull Bland from her mother. She stated Bland never intentionally hurt her but did pull on her t-shirt and ripped it as he was pushing her away.
She suffered a small abrasion on her nose, which she believed she got from Bland when she was trying to remove Bland from her mother.
Bland was detained on charges of strangulation, two counts of domestic battery, and battery in the presence of a minor.
Bland told police he was asleep when the woman came in, woke him, and began yelling at him. He admitted he had “done something bad after work.” He admitted he had met with a girl, which is why the woman was upset. He then admitted he pushed the woman away from him, and his hands were around her neck, but he never strangled her.
When asked how the second female’s shirt ripped, he said, “It was probably from trying to keep her away.”
He also admitted to punching the door frame to the bathroom, but it didn’t cause any damage.
Bland would not say precisely what took place and continued to ignore questions.
The woman refused to sign a battery affidavit.
The Department of Child Services was also contacted.
