Altrusa members continue to help Lawrence County community

BEDFORD— In President Bill Barnes’s absence, Secretary Mary Barnes led The June 2024 Altrusa meeting at the annex of the Southland Church of Christ.

Guests for the night were Greg and Rosemary Stanley, representing the Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll project, and Lisa Dumond of Lark.

Greg discussed how Altrusa can help with the Tootsie Roll sales this year, describing how the funds are distributed throughout the community to assist with projects such as Coats for Kids and LARK, to name a few. At the end of the meeting, personal donations were made to help purchase the Tootsie Rolls for this year. Lisa spoke about the ongoing activities at LARK and discussed ways Altrusa can continue to support them.

As Treasurer Sara Kern reported, 25 members renewed their membership for the 2024-2025 club year. The five outstanding active members were lost due to illness and moves. If you are interested in considering a membership, please get in touch with Altrusa for information.

Mary discussed the proposed new $18,099 budget, which was approved with a motion by Nina Doan, a second by Sara, and a vote by the membership.

Altrusa is working with the Lawrence County Museum and Geological Society to sponsor a Brain Games
team. The games will be held at Stonegate on June 25th and 27th at 6:00 p.m. with the public welcome.4

This Thursday, members are going to Becky’s Place to assist with cleaning out and re-arranging their
storage space. Besides this assistance, Altrusa sponsors many activities, including a simple, easy
cookbook for daily personal needs. Altrusa also sponsors one of the many rooms by renovating it as needed, including painting and providing furniture, bedding, draperies, etc. Becky’s Place provides a safe temporary home for women and children in need.

To date, Altrusans are sorting plastic caps and lids, left over from those collected for the 2024 Pickle Ball Court project for the Bedford Parks Department, in preparation for an additional project with them for the
2025 season. It is anticipated that we will need somewhere between 1200 and 1600 lbs., and currently have approximately half of that.

The next meeting is scheduled for July 8th at 5:30 at the annex of Southland Church of Christ.
