State Road 37 deadliest in Indiana, according to study

INDIANA – State Road 37 is the deadliest highway in Indiana, according to a recent study by The Barber Law Firm, a Dallas-based law office.

  1. State Route 37 – 8.4 average yearly fatalities
  2. State Route 67 – 7.4 average yearly fatalities
  3. State Route 3 – 5.6 average yearly fatalities
  4. State Route 135 – 4.2 average yearly fatalities
  5. State Route 62 – 4.0 average yearly fatalities

State Road 37 saw an average of 8.4 fatalities per year over the five-year period that was measured. In total, there were 42 deaths recorded on the route from 37 fatal crashes, and the worst year for fatalities was 2022 when 14 deaths occurred.

State Road 67

State Road 67 comes in second place with an average of 7.4 fatalities. Between 2018 and 2022, there were 31 fatal crashes, which resulted in 37 deaths. 2022 was the worst year, when 12 crashes resulted in 15 deaths. State Road 67 cuts a diagonal route from southwest to northeast across the state from the north side of Vincennes to Indianapolis to the Ohio state line.

In third place is State Road 3, with an average of 5.6 fatalities between 2018 and 2022. With 11 deaths caused by nine accidents, 2022 was the deadliest year.

The study analyzed fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) for 2018-2022. The number of fatalities and fatal crashes ranked routes. Roads with fewer than ten crashes over the last five years were excluded from the study.
