The Bedford Public Library celebrates Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday

BEDFORD- Smokey Bear was introduced in 1944 by the U.S. Forest Service and the Ad Council to promote forest fire prevention. His creation was inspired by the need to protect resources during World War II and the aftermath of a severe forest fire in 1942. Smokey’s message, “Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires,” became well-known across the U.S. Smokey’s fame soared in 1950 when a real bear cub, later named Smokey, was rescued from a New Mexico wildfire. The bear became the living symbol of the campaign, contributing to the enduring legacy of Smokey Bear in promoting wildfire awareness and safety.

Today, Smokey visited the Bedford Public Library to celebrate his 80th birthday. Kids gathered to hear about Smokey’s history.

Smokey then assisted with a presentation on how to help prevent forest fires and be a good steward of the forest. “Smokey is a great way to get the community involved in forest preservation,” said Jasmine Lyons with the Forest Service in Bedford.
