BEDFORD— On Wednesday, June 12th, James Lee Hutchinson celebrated his 99th birthday. Hutchinson served as a technical sergeant in World War II from 1943 to 1945.
Hutchinson grew up in Bedford and currently lives there. As a child, he experienced the Great Depression, which he wrote about in his books. He studied in Bedford Public Schools and attended Indiana University.
He earned three degrees from Indiana University and was an educator for 37 years until he retired in 1987. He served as a teacher, principal, and Assistant Superintendent for the Bedford school system during those years.
Hutchinson has written multiple books about his experiences, most notably The Boys in the B-17 and B-17 Memories. He has also collected the works of other veterans and published those in his books.
Hutchinson now dedicates himself to telling the stories of those who fought for our freedom. His motto today is “Knowledge for the young – Memories for the old.”
