BEDFORD – Community Corrections Director Chad Shew asked the commissioners Tuesday morning for some opioid settlement funds to pay for a new trailer for the roadcrew program.

She said the trailer recently needed to be repaired and found that the trailer was unsafe to use.

Sean Rickett of Southern Indiana Trailer Sales, who inspected the trailer when it was getting new bearings, found that scouring on the axles caused the bearing issue.

To make it safe to use, both axles need to be replaced. They also found some structural lighting issues.

“All those repairs are fairly expensive but are needed to make the trailer safe to use,” said Shew. “It would be better to purchase a new trailer.”

Those sentenced to road crew mow several areas in Lawrence County at no cost to the county. They include:

  • The Lawrence County Courthouse
  • Dunn Plaza along Mitchell Road and 25th Street
  • The county line sign on State Road 37 at the Monroe and Orange County line
  • County recycling property on Mitchell Road
  • The Welcome sign, corner of SandPit and Mitchell Road
  • The probation and community correction parking lot area, with trimming weeds on the south side of the plaza, upper and lower parking lot, and the weeds in the alley
  • Foote’s Tomb on 16th Street
  • Families Forever on 23rd Street
  • Judah Park
  • Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County on occasion
  • Greenhill Cemetery at 17th and K Streets on occasion

Road crew also assist with many other projects, including picking up trash along the roadway and working at the fairgrounds and other areas of need.
