Mother and 16-year-old boyfriend charged in girl’s death

EVANSVILLE — The Vanderburgh County Coroner’s Office has identified a 4-year-old girl who recently passed away, leading to criminal charges against two people.

Christian T. Gonzalez

Evansville Police say 16-year-old Christian T. Gonzalez of Fort Wayne, who was arrested last week in connection to the death of 4-year-old Octavia Aquino, was waived from juvenile court and is now being charged with murder. They say his 23-year-old girlfriend and the mother of the child, Destiny Rhoades, will also face the charge of neglect of a dependent resulting in death.

Octavia was found unresponsive in an apartment on Spring Valley Road late last week. When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Octavia “cold to the touch” and transported her to a hospital. Gonzalez and others were in the apartment while the mother was at work.
