Police find man smoking a joint, detained on marijuana and intimidation charges

MITCHELL – A Mitchell man was arrested Friday, June 14, after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of a dispute in the 1000 block of Rabbitsville Road.

When police arrived, they found a distraught woman who said her son had threatened to kill her. The male was 38-year-old Jayce Hughes.

The woman said Hughes could be found at the back of the property. Police found Hughes sitting in a blue lawn chair. He had a square metal object in his lap that contained marijuana. He rolled a marijuana cigarette and began smoking it.

Hughes told Deputies Duprey and Atchison that his mother was using “controlling verbiage and mechanisms on him.” While speaking to Hughes, the officers saw a baggie that contained marijuana.

Police told Hughes they were going to issue him a summons to appear in court for possession of marijuana, and he replied that he would rather go to jail.

He was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car on charges of possession of marijuana and intimidation. Police seized 0.7 grams of marijuana.
