Traffic stop leads police to find meth in man’s pocket

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on meth charges after he was stopped for failing to use his turn signal.

According to Bedford Police Officer Landon Jones, he spotted the driver of a tan Buick Century traveling north on Mitchell Road when the driver failed to use his turn signal while turning left onto 10th Street. The vehicle only had one working brake light.

Officer Jones initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle stopped at the intersection of John Williams Boulevard and X Street.

The driver, 38-year-old Jayce Shifflet, provided the officer with his driver’s license but didn’t know where the vehicle registration was.

Shifflet was asked to exit the vehicle while Officer Jones ran his information. Officer Jones gave Shifflet a written warning for not using his turn signal and for the non-working brake light.

Shifflet then permitted officers to search his person and vehicle.

Officer Sarah Haluda located a baggy containing a crystal substance in Shifflet’s pocket. He told police the substance was meth.

Shifflet claimed the meth was not his, and he was wearing pants that belonged to a male named Trevor. However, he didn’t know Trevor’s last name.

Police also detected Shifflet had been drinking. He admitted he had drank a shot of whiskey at 6:00 a.m., and he had last smoked meth two days ago.

Shifflet was detained on a charge of possession of meth and was transported to the Bedford Police Department. Once there, Shifflet performed several field sobriety tests, which he passed.

He also submitted to a SoToxa test. SoToxa is a handheld analyzer that uses an oral fluid swab to detect the presence of six kinds of drugs: cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates, cannabis (THC), amphetamine, and benzodiazepines, and a preliminary breath test. Both had negative results.
