HELTONVILLE – A Heltonville woman is facing charges of dealing and possession of meth after Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Wednesday, June 19 went to a home in the 100 block of Railroad Street to arrest 29-year-old Brittany Carter on a warrant to revoke her probation.
Captain Harrison Fleetwood and Canine Officer Joshua Rhoades arrived they were greeted at the front door by Carter’s father. He said Carter was not there and was supposed to be checking herself in at Transitions. He said he would call Carter and have her turn herself in.
The officers were returning to their vehicles when they noticed the lights on in a single-wide trailer east of the home on the same property. Officers approached the mobile home and heard someone yell,” Oh s***, the cops.” All the lights then went off, and police could see shadows moving in the mobile home.
The windows were open in the mobile home and police could smell the odor of marijuana. There was a glass smoking device containing a white powdery substance sitting on the counter.
Police knocked on the door and announced their presence. No one answered. Police then announced they would apply for a search warrant.
Officer Rhoades then spoke to Carter’s father and asked who lived in the mobile home. He admitted the trailer belonged to his uncle and Carter and her boyfriend were renting it.
Carter’s father went to the trailer, knocked on the door, and told Carter to surrender. Carter and a female friend exited the home. Carter was detained.
At this time Carter’s boyfriend arrived on the scene.
Carter asked if there was anything she could do not to receive drug charges. When asked how much marijuana and meth officers would find, Carter admitted there was over an ounce of meth in her purse.
Police were then given consent to search the mobile home.
Police seized more than 65 grams of meth in Carter’s purse, a glass smoking device and a scale. The meth was packaged in small baggies with the weight of the contents written on the baggies.
David Halley, 45, was also detained after police learned he was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear on a contempt of court charge.
Carter was arrested on the warrant and new charges of dealing and possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
