Donald Gordon Henderson, 79, of Bedford, died at Hearthstone Health Campus on Tuesday, June 18th, 2024.
Don practiced law in Bedford, Indiana, for forty-two years, from 1973-2015. He worked with his father, Gordon R. Henderson, for decades at their law office, Henderson and Henderson Attorneys. Don graduated from Bedford High School in 1964. He received his B.S. from the School of Business, Indiana University, in 1968 and his Juris Doctor from Indiana University in 1971. Don received admission to the Indiana State Bar in 1971. He was an ROTC officer at Indiana University, was appointed Lieutenant in Army Field Artillery, and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was detailed to the JAG Corps from Artillery and practiced law for the Army.
He began his legal career in Bedford in 1973 in private practice and in the public defender’s office. Don was appointed Trustee for the Federal Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Indiana, in New Albany, Indiana, in 1988 and served until 2011. This was a particular point of pride for Don, as he was often seen casually wearing a blue knit vest bearing the court’s seal. He also sat on Moot Court at the Indiana University School of Law.
Don was a Dunn Hospital and Stone City Bank board member and served on the Lawrence County Election Board. He was also an avid golfer. Don also was a private pilot instructor, where he learned to fly at age 11. He would often tow aerial signage over events in Bloomington and give flying lessons and a hustling pool at the student union during his college years.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon R. Henderson and Helen (Evans) Henderson. He is survived by his son, Matt.
