Obituary: Benjamin ‘Benny’ Chambers

August 20, 1939 – June 30, 2024

Benjamin ‘Benny’ Chambers, 84, of Bloomington, passed away at 4:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at Cedar Hurst of Bloomington.

Born August 20, 1939, in Indianapolis, Ben was the son of Morris and Marie (Mitchell) Chambers. He grew up on the family farm in Needmore, Indiana, and graduated from Needmore High School. One of his claims to fame was making the last-second game-winning basketball shot for the Hilltoppers! Ben went to Indiana University, where he got his undergraduate and graduate degrees in business. He worked for 30 years at IU, retiring as the Contract and Grant Administration Assistant Director.

Ben’s favorite pastimes include watching college football and basketball, playing euchre, reading mysteries, and working on the farm.

Ben and his wife, Brenda, have been married since 1963. They have enjoyed spending time with life-long friends, traveling around the country, and attending Sherwood Oaks Christian Church.

Ben and Brenda are the proud parents of their two children. Their daughter, Alayna Gray, lives in Bloomington with her husband, Walt. They have two children, Bryce, who lives in Denver, and Macy, who attends Ball State. Ben and Brenda’s son, Eric Chambers, live on the family farm in Needmore with his wife, Missy, and their children, Breanna and Logan. Their son Matthew Alle lives nearby with his children, Rain and Coal.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3rd, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Pastor Lyndon Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow in Cresthaven Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the hour of service on Wednesday at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
