BROWN COUNTY— Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Ragle, Inc. began work at the intersection of State Road 135 and Main Street in May 2024 to complete an intersection modernization and improvement project in Nashville.
The project will modernize the current traditional intersection into an exclusive pedestrian phase intersection. An exclusive pedestrian phase intersection is a type of traffic signal movement that temporarily stops all vehicular traffic, allowing pedestrians to cross an intersection in any direction, at the same time. Exclusive pedestrian phase intersections are installed to ensure that people crossing the street are able to do so without any vehicle movement through the intersection.
Recent studies show a decrease in pedestrian vs. vehicular crashes where exclusive pedestrian phase intersections were installed. Effectively, they eliminate potential conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles and enhance safety and mobility through the intersection.
The exclusive pedestrian phase intersection is expected to begin operating by late July 2024, weather permitting. INDOT reminds drivers to slow down, use extra caution and avoid distractions when traveling in and near work zones. All work is weather-dependent and schedules are subject to change.
