ISP investigating police-involved shooting in Marion

MARION – The Indiana State Police, at the request of the Marion Police Department, is investigating a police-involved shooting in which a man from Marion died.

The preliminary investigation by Indiana State Police detectives revealed that today, at approximately 5:30 a.m., officers from the Marion Police Department responded to 2106 W. 8th St. on a report of an unwanted person inside the residence who had an active arrest warrant for invasion of privacy.

While on the scene, Marion Police located 39-year-old Michael Martel Guy inside the residence. Further investigation revealed he had an active protection order against him.

Officers attempted to place Guy into custody for the active warrant. Guy did not cooperate, leading to a physical altercation with the officers. During the struggle, Guy managed to remove the holster containing the handgun off the duty belt of one of the officers. A department-issued taser was deployed; however, it was unsuccessful. A Marion Police Officer fired at least once, striking Guy.

Despite life-saving measures, Guy succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Notification to Guy’s family has been made.

No officers were injured in the incident. The Marion Police Officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. This is standard operating procedure for the Marion Police Department when an officer is involved in a shooting.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No further information will be released at this time.

Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be provided to the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
