BEDFORD – Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer and Sheriff Greg Day praised Purdue Extension and fair officials for taking the necessary steps to keep people safe during the fair after a tornado warning was issued on Wednesday, July 10.
4-H shows and grandstand events were canceled, barns secured, and the fairgrounds evacuated in case bad weather hit.
“They did the right thing and shut down and evacuated,” added Luchauer. “I know it might have made people mad, but it’s better to have them mad over that than mad over someone getting hurt or killed.”
Sheriff Greg Day added he was proud of the reserve officers who worked all week without pay at the fairgrounds.
“They did an outstanding job,” he added. “They provided a positive image and interacted with community members and the 4-H kids.”
