Man arrested on OWI charges after two-vehicle accident

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested after police say he was driving while intoxicated.

Bedford Police Department Officer Jarrett Tedrow was on patrol at 4:52 p.m. on Wednesday, July 10, when he was requested to respond to the 500 block of Heltonville Road East after a report of an accident.

When he arrived, he found a blue Chevrolet Silverado with rear-end damage in the front yard and a blue Chevrolet Blazer with significant front-end damage in the roadway. All of the occupants were out of the vehicle.

Police spoke to 25-year-old Dawson Scalf and 23-year-old Madeline Ford.

Dawson Scalf

While speaking to Scalf and Ford, the officers could smell the odor of alcohol. Dawson told police he was the driver of the Blazer and Ford was his passenger. Police say Dawson appeared to be intoxicated. When asked how much he had consumed, he replied, “Not very much.” He said, “I can probably pass a breathalyzer.”

Scalf was treated at the scene for minor injuries. He declined further medical attention.

Dawson told police he couldn’t stop the Blazer because the brakes were hot, and he crashed into the rear end of the Silverado. He told police he didn’t have insurance.

The driver of the Silverado, 75-year-old Richard Fassino complained of minor discomfort but declined medical attention.

He told police he was traveling east on Heltonville Road (State Road 58) toward his home and used his turn signal to indicate he was slowing to make a turn. As he slowed, his vehicle was struck from behind, pushing his vehicle down the road. The Silverado came to a stop in Fassion’s front yard.

Scalf failed several field sobriety tests. He performed a preliminary breath test and had a blood-alcohol level of 0.096 percent. He was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital for a blood draw and received medical treatment for any injuries that occurred during the crash.

Police found open Mike’s Harder Malt Liquor containers on the driver’s floorboard.

Scalf was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and OWI endangerment.

Stone City Collision towed Scalf’s vehicle.
