Man arrested after police find meth and heroin in vehicle

BEDFORD – Bedford Police Department Officer Taylor Daugherty was on patrol on State Road 37 near 5th Street on Thursday, July 18, when she spotted a blue 2009 Chevrolet Silverado traveling north on State Road 37 with no license plate light.

She stopped the driver, 44-year-old Robert Phillips of Bedford, at 1:31 a.m.

Robert Phillips

Phillips was arrested on charges of possession of meth, possession of a narcotic drug, unlawful possession of a syringe, and he was wanted on a probation violation.

After activating her police lights, the driver continued on State Road 37 and turned west onto 16th Street. The vehicle stopped in the Reveres Food & Fuel parking lot.

While Phillips was retrieving his driver’s license and registration, he said the truck belonged to his brother and not to him.

Officer Daugherty said Phillips was nervous. He then admitted that he was wanted on a probation violation warrant. He was asked to step out of the vehicle and was detained.

Officer Clay Blackburn arrived on the scene to assist.

Officer Daugherty confirmed Phillips was wanted on a warrant and he was read his Miranda Rights. He was then asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle. He admitted he had found a syringe in the back seat the day before and had placed it in the door panel in an envelope. When asked when the last time he had used illegal drugs he said about a month ago.

Phillips was searched and placed in Officer Blackburn’s patrol vehicle.

He was transported to the Lawrence County Jail. While en route, he admitted there was meth in between the seats of the vehicle.

Officers located a syringe in the front passenger seat, a syringe in the back driver’s door panel in an envelope, a clear baggie on the driver’s floorboard, and a bagging in a cup holder in the center console: one baggy contained meth, the other heroin.

The vehicle was inventoried, and Stone City Service and Collision Center towed it off the scene.
