BARTHOLOMEW CO. – A driver was found dead in a vehicle after a pickup drove into a lake in western Bartholomew County on Sunday, July 21, around 3:43 p.m.
According to witnesses, the truck hit a mailbox, traveled through a yard, damaged a carport and a fence, traveled down a hill and across a dock, and ended up partially submerged in the lake in the 8000 block of West Old Nashville Road, off State Road 46 about 3 miles west of the I-65 interchange.
Residents went into the water to help the driver until rescue workers arrived. Deputies say that despite the assistance from the bystanders and medics, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said on Monday they believe the driver possibly suffered a medical episode that led to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, and the driver’s name has not yet been released.
