BEDFORD – Lawrence Superior Court I Judge John M. Plummer III sentenced a Bedford woman to ten years in the Indiana Department of Correction after she pleaded guilty in a negotiated plea deal.
Kaci L. Prewitt, 38, pled guilty to a Level 3 felony for conspiracy to commit dealing in methamphetamine.
Prewitt was sentenced to 14 years at the Indiana Department of Correction, with ten years to be executed and two years to be served on supervised probation once she’s released from prison.
However, upon serving at least five years, completing Recovery While Incarcerated, and having no behavior violations, Prewitt may petition the court to modify her sentence.
“The Lawrence County Prosecutor’s Office has zero tolerance for defendants coming to Lawrence County and selling drugs. You cannot come into Lawrence County, sell drugs, and not expect to suffer the consequences,” said Chief Deputy Prosecutor Joshua Scherschel.
Prewitt was arrested on Friday, August 25, 2024, when officers with the Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department concluded a lengthy investigation into the dealing of methamphetamine.
Police arrested 34-year-old Hope Grissom and 37-year-old Kaci Prewitt, both of Bedford.
Officers had received information that both Grissom and Prewitt were involved with dealing meth in and around Lawrence County, so an investigation was launched.
Using various investigative techniques, probable cause was established to corroborate the allegations. That afternoon, a traffic stop was conducted on Grissom along State Road 37 near Judah. Lawrence County Sgt. Michael Williams deployed his canine, Fleck, who gave a positive alert on Grissom’s vehicle. A subsequent search revealed that Grissom had approximately three grams of meth, along with multiple types of controlled substance pills and a loaded handgun.
At the same time, a traffic stop was conducted in Bloomington on Prewitt by the Indiana State Police and Bloomington Police Department. Prewitt was found to have approximately 14 grams of methamphetamine.
As a result of the investigation and the traffic stops, both females were arrested and incarcerated at the Lawrence County Jail.
Grissom was arrested on felony charges of conspiracy to deal meth, dealing meth, and possession of controlled substances.
Prewitt was arrested on a felony charge of conspiracy to deal meth.
Grissom is scheduled to appear in Lawrence County Superior Court I on September 4, 2024, at 9:00 a.m. for a pre-trial conference. A three-day jury trial is scheduled for December 11-13.
