Mitchell Walking Club’s first Sneaker Giveaway helped hundreds in the community

MITCHELL- It’s back-to-school time, and parents know all too well the costs and stresses that come with it. The Mitchell Walking Club wanted to give back to their community and had an idea that helped hundreds of children by providing shoes just in time for the school year.

The event served hundreds in the community.

The club raised money through online fundraisers, roadblocks, and change jars at local businesses. After all was said and done, the club raised over $4,000 to provide almost 550 pairs of shoes to be distributed. The shoes were purchased from local stores, with locally raised money, helping the community to thrive.

“We started with the idea right after school started last year,” said Chauntina Hickey, President of the Mitchell Walking Club, “we noticed tennis shoes were on the school supply list for gym class. Kids would want to show off their new shoes on the first day of school, and we thought, what about the kids who don’t get to show off new shoes?”

Shoes could be had in all youth sizes, with dozens of colors and styles to choose from.

Other school supplies were also offered to help ease the burden on parents this school year. Complimentary popcorn was even made to munch on while you selected your new shoes.

Cheryl Mead with Running With Scissors provided free haircuts. “I grew up as an underprivileged child and always liked getting my hair done, so I wanted to make that possible for them.”

Thanks to all who participated in and made this event possible. It is a huge help for our local families and shows what can be accomplished when a community comes together.
