Driver was stopped for an expired license plate and arrested on drug charges

BEDFORD – A Bedford man was arrested on drug charges on Thursday, July 25 after Lawrence County Police Department Sheriff’s Department Deputy Thomas Porter stopped him for an expired license plate.

Deputy Porter was on patrol when he noticed the silver Chevrolet Trailblazer with the expired plate traveling north on State Road 37, just south of State Road 54 West. The plate had expired on December 7, 2023.

Travis Wells

The driver, 53-year-old Travis Wells pulled over north of State Road 54 on State Road 37.

While speaking to Wells, Officer Porter noticed knives, and an electronic pen commonly used to smoke THC wax located in between the passenger seat and the center console near the seat buckle.

Officer Porter requested Wells’ driver’s license, insurance, and registration.

Officer Chris Griggs arrived to assist.

He was asked to step out of the vehicle and was detained. Police searched the vehicle and found the THC pen, a plastic container that contained 2.2 grams of crystal meth, including the packaging, and numerous knives.

Wells was arrested on charges of possession of meth and marijuana and transported to jail.

The vehicle was released to Wells’ wife.
