INDIANA – A recent analysis of tree inventories from 14 Indiana communities found that ash trees (Fraxinus genus) make up almost 8% of the urban canopy. Even though the emerald ash borer (EAB) was first detected in Indiana 20 years ago (2004), ash trees are still a considerable portion of the urban canopy.
Top three most common tree genera found in 14 Indiana communities (2017-2023)
- Acer—31%
- Fraxinus—7.8%
- Quercus—7.1%
Suppose your community is trying to determine the best course of action in recovery efforts or decide what to do with the remaining healthy ash trees. In that case, we may be able to help with assistance from a new grant opportunity.
The State Urban Forest Resilience (SUFR) Grant is now accepting applications from communities and nonprofits looking to restore and improve urban forests due to catastrophic losses from EAB while building resiliency through tree diversity and the protection of existing trees. Funds from this grant are to be used for management and reforestation efforts that include tree planting, tree removals, and treatment of threatened trees.
