PAOLI – As the new school year begins, the Paoli Police Department is increasing patrols and urging drivers to be vigilant around school buses. While school buses are generally safe, accidents involving students often occur near the buses due to driver error. Drivers are required to slow down and stop when a school bus activates its flashing lights and stop arm. Exceptions apply only on divided highways with physical barriers.
A recent survey revealed a shocking number of stop-arm violations in Indiana. To emphasize the importance of bus safety, the area around a school bus is known as the “Danger Zone.” This includes 10 feet in front of the bus, 10 feet on either side and behind the bus. The Paoli Police Department is committed to protecting students and urges drivers to obey school bus laws.
