The get-away driver, 23-year-old Madalyn Dennis, is facing five counts of conspiracy to commit attempted murder for her alleged role as the driver of the vehicle containing the two alleged shooters.

Wittmer is also charged with murder in a separate shooting that occurred that same night at a home on North 14th Street.

Police say the murder and the attempted murder are not connected.

A trial date has been set for Wittmer, 18, in connection with the murder of James Mischler.

Wittmer appeared in Knox Superior Court on Friday for his initial hearing. He was formally charged, and a preliminary plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. The trial is scheduled to begin on October 15.

The court appointed Cole Kirchoff and Bryan Jewell as Wittmer’s attorneys. Chief Deputy Prosecutor Mike Steiner will present the state’s case.

Wittmer is charged in the shooting death of Mischler on July 24. Police were called to the 1300 block of North 14th at 12:35 a.m. and learned that Wittmer had left the scene.

A witness at the scene told police the shooting occurred following a long day of arguments and discussion between Wittmer and Mischler.

Mcishler died from several gunshot wounds to the chest.

Wittmer was later located and arrested without incident at a home in the 1600 block of Canbro Street.

Police reported locating a 9mm Glock handgun with an extended magazine hidden under a couch in the home’s basement that matched the description provided by the witness at the scene of the shooting.

Wittmer remains jailed in Knox County without bond.
