INDIANA – Chief Justice Loretta Rush announced today that the Indiana Judicial Nominating Commission will begin accepting applications for a vacancy on the Court of Appeals. The state’s second-highest court position will become available when Judge Terry Crone, representing the third appellate district, retires this fall.
Chief Justice Rush, who chairs the Commission, and Court of Appeals Chief Judge Robert Altice, Jr. encourage eligible Indiana judges and lawyers to consider applying. Applications are due by September 12 at noon (Eastern).
A candidate for the vacancy must be an Indiana resident living in the third appellate district. Candidates must also be a member of the Indiana Bar for at least ten years or have served as an Indiana judge for five years. Candidates must provide pertinent background information, writing samples, references, and educational transcripts.
The Commission will consider the applications and letters of recommendation and conduct public interviews of qualified candidates. Interviews are expected to be performed in October. Recently, the Commission accepted applications to fill a vacancy from the same area of the state—that of retiring Judge Patricia Riley. Applicants who applied for that position will also be considered for Judge Crone’s vacancy.
After deliberating in executive session, the Commission will publicly vote to send the three most qualified names to Governor Eric Holcomb. The Governor will have 60 days to select Indiana’s next Court of Appeals judge from the three names submitted by the Commission.
The seven-member Commission includes Chief Justice Rush as chair, three lawyers elected by their peers, and three citizen members appointed by the Governor. Details on the Commission, including membership, are online. Those interested in applying may contact Commission Staff Attorney Larry Newman at Larry.Newman@courts.in.gov.
