Indiana State Police recruiting for 87th Recruit Academy

JASPER – The Indiana State Police is calling all those seeking a fulfilling career in law enforcement to join the ranks of Indiana State Troopers. Applications are now open for the 87th Recruit Academy, welcoming both traditional and lateral applicants.

Probationary Troopers who graduate from the 87th Academy and successfully complete their Field Training Officer program will receive a one-time cash bonus of $5,000 on top of their regular salary.

The Indiana State Police offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes access to the Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits during the academy and probationary year, with options for military and law enforcement service purchase. Additionally, successful recruits will receive a take-home patrol vehicle after completing the FTO period, along with uniforms and over $9,000 worth of equipment – all at no cost.

The commitment to health and well-being is evident with three hours of on-duty physical training per week, along with generous leave policies including 40 paid days annually and 150 hours of New Parent Leave. To be eligible for consideration as an Indiana State Trooper, applicants must be a US citizen, at least 21 years old but younger than 40 when appointed (July 17th, 2025 for traditional applicants), meet vision standards, possess a valid driver’s license, and be willing to relocate and serve anywhere within the state as designated by the Superintendent. A high school diploma or GED is mandatory.

Current law enforcement officers with a minimum of three years of continuous service as of December 11th, 2024 can apply and may be assigned to their current district. Out-of-state officers with similar qualifications may also be eligible for their preferred district, contingent on their home state certification meeting Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board standards.

Lateral police officer applicants must be under 40 when appointed on June 5th, 2025. Performance will be continuously monitored throughout the program, with the option to transition to the traditional recruit academy if necessary.
