INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, August 6, Gov. Eric J. Holcomb, 48th Vice President Mike Pence, 49th Gov. Mitch Daniels, and INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith were joined by members of the I-69 Finish Line project team and contracting partners, as well as federal, state and local officials for Connecting the Crossroads, an event held to mark the opening of the new I-69/I-465 system interchange to traffic.
Once the system interchange opens to traffic, this milestone will complete the connection of the 142-mile corridor from Evansville to Indianapolis, a project decades in the making!
The I-69 Finish Line is the sixth and final section of the I-69 connection between Evansville and Indianapolis, beginning in Martinsville and ending at I-465. With the opening of the interchange, I-69 runs continuously from the Canadian border at Port Huron, Mich., to Evansville, Ind.
The I-69/I-465 system interchange will open in phases to allow crews to shift traffic safely and efficiently. Here’s what you should know.
On the evening of Tuesday, August 6:
- Open eastbound and westbound I-465 ramps to southbound I-69
- Open Epler Avenue on-ramp to southbound I-69
On or after Friday, August 9:
- Open northbound I-69 ramps to eastbound and westbound I-465
- Open northbound I-69 exit ramp to Epler Avenue
On or after Sunday, August 11 (Closed for up to 60 days):
- Close westbound I-465 exit ramp to Harding Street
- Close Harding Street entrance ramp to eastbound I-465
Mid-October 2024 (Closed for up to 60 days):
- Close eastbound I-465 exit ramp to Harding Street
- Close Harding Street entrance ramp to westbound I-465
The area near I-465 will remain an active construction zone after the interchange opens to traffic. Drivers can expect temporary lane closures and reduced speed limits as crews complete bridge and pavement work before moving I-465 into its permanent configuration later this year. This includes construction at the existing Harding Street interchange.
Find more information about the system interchange opening here.
I-465 lane and ramp closures:
- Westbound I-465 between I-65 and I-70 will be reduced to one lane with 20-minute stops each night through Saturday, August 10, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. for paving, traffic shifts, bridge beam delivery, and placement. This single-lane condition is expected to cause delays. Use an alternate route if possible.
I-465 Reminder:
- The westbound I-465 exit ramp at Mann Road (Exit 7) was closed on Friday, July 26. It will be closed for up to 60 days for pavement reconstruction in westbound lanes. Motorists needing to access Mann Road from westbound I-465 should exit at Kentucky Avenue/SR 67 (Exit 8). A map of the ramp closure is available here.
-69 Traffic Updates:
- Speed limit signs will increase to 55 mph on I-69 northbound and southbound between Smith Valley Road and SR 144 on or after Tuesday, August 6.
