Two charged after more than 300 animals were rescued from a home in Owen County

OWEN CO. — In July, more than 300 animals were rescued from an Owen County home as deputies conducted an animal seizure involving several species.

According to the Owen County Humane Society, workers were called to assist deputies with the Owen County Sheriff’s Department on Monday, July 8, at a residence in the 3700 block of Truesdel Road in Gosport.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Office was called about possible neglect of a horse at the home.  When a deputy arrived, he reported that most animals had no food or water. When he returned with a search warrant, some water had been placed with some of the animals.

The veterinarian with them found many dead animals in cages or otherwise on the property.

With the help of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health, Owen County Humane Society rescued 243 animals on July 8th and 105 animals on July 18th.

Cody Woods and Amanda Simpson are both charged with cruelty to animals. Simpson is also facing a charge of failure to dispose of a dead animal properly.

Authorities found several hundred species of animals on the property. The nonprofit organization confirmed at least 10 dead animals were also found in cages.

There were 17 dogs and puppies, 29 ducks, 225 chickens, 21 sheep, nine rabbits, 25 goats, four horses, four pigs, two cows, two bearded dragons, and 10 cats and kittens. Shortly after arriving at the shelter, one of the cats had six kittens.

“We are extremely grateful to our rescue partners who showed up and have helped us in the past,” officials posted on Facebook. “If not for them to help transport and care for the farm animals, the animals wouldn’t have received the immediate medical care that they needed.”

The Shelter must raise $25,000 for the existing vet bills and pay for ongoing medical care.
