JEFFERSONVILLE – Indiana State Police arrested 35-year-old Brittany Baylor, a Jeffersonville resident and home-based childcare provider, on felony battery charges related to child abuse following an investigation.
The investigation began earlier this year when ISP Detective Mike Bennett learned of an incident reported to the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) in February 2024.
During his investigation, Detective Bennett discovered that a two-month-old child was picked up by a family member from an unlicensed, in-home daycare operated by Baylor of Jeffersonville, Indiana. It was alleged that Baylor placed the child in a car seat when the family member picked up the infant and that the two-month-old was crying during that time.
When the family member arrived home and attempted to change the child’s diaper, they noticed the child’s leg was very sensitive. The infant’s mother then took the child to Norton’s Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
Doctors at the hospital determined the child had a broken right leg. A report later prepared by Norton’s Pediatric Protection Specialist stated the injury was diagnostic of inflicted child physical abuse.
Detective Bennett continued the investigation by conducting interviews and working with DCS personnel.
On July 22, 2024, Detective Bennett submitted all information to the Clark County Prosecutor’s Office for review and possible charges. Subsequently, an arrest warrant was issued, and Brittany Baylor was served with the new charges while being held at the Clark County Jail on separate charges stemming from a prior investigation conducted by Detective Bennett.
Baylor was charged with one count of battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 3 felony, and neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury, also a Level 3 felony.
Baylor was in jail after being arrested in June 2024 after a child in her care died in 2022.
The tragic investigation began in July of 2022 when the Jeffersonville Police Department requested Indiana State Police Detectives investigate the heartbreaking case of an unresponsive six-month-old infant after officers from Jeffersonville initially responded to the scene.
EMS personnel initially rushed the child to Clark Memorial Hospital but ultimately transferred the child to Kosair’s Children’s Hospital (now Norton’s Children’s Hospital) in Louisville, Kentucky. The child died later that day.
ISP Detective Mike Bennett led the investigation, including interviews with the parents and Baylor and speaking with pediatric doctors. Detective Bennett also attended an autopsy conducted by the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office. The final autopsy report stated the child’s death was due to a closed head injury sustained in an assault.
Detective Bennett provided his completed report to the Clark County Prosecutor’s office in September 2022. After receiving the report, the Prosecutor’s office forwarded the report for review to doctors at Norton’s Pediatric Protective Services. That report was returned to Detective Bennett in May of 2024, and the Clark County Circuit 4 Court issued a warrant for Baylor on Tuesday, June 4, 2024. The warrant listed the charges as aggravated battery resulting in death and neglect of a dependent resulting in death.
Brittany Baylor was arrested that evening without incident and transported to the Clark County Jail.
